Injury and Accidents
What is a Disc Injury?
Spinal discs are the "cushions" of material between the bones (called vertebrae or vertebra) of the spine. These discs are important because with so many nerves running up and down, and to and from, the spinal column, cushioning is vital -- or pain and disability can result. Spine injuries, including herniated discs and bulging discs are often the result of a vehicle accident, or a work injury or fall.
Injury Results
Disc injuries can result in chronic and often debilitating pain, numbness and weakness in the legs and/or temporary or permanent disability. Herniated discs can cause tingling and numbness, shooting pains (usually down the legs), muscle weakness, and even bowel and bladder problems (known as cauda equina syndrome). This condition requires immediate attention and can be very serious.

Herniated Disc Injury/Bulging Disc Injury
A herniated disc Injury occurs when the cartilage around a disc ruptures (tears) and releases the nucleus pulposus that is the cushioning between the vertebrae. This can cause pinching or compression of the spinal nerves (a pinched nerve) and/or compression of the spinal cord itself. Other common terms for this type of back injury are: slipped disc, ruptured disc, or a disc protrusion.
A bulging disc Injury can also occur where the nucleus pulposus is not completely released from the disk but protrudes out, and can also cause pinching or compression.
Common Causes of a Herniated Spine Injury include:
- a motor vehicle accident
- a fall from a height, such as a fall off of a ladder, scaffolding or a roof
- lower back strain from twisting or lifting a heavy object
- chronic lifting of heavy objects at work without proper back support
- repetitive stress to the back such as those from constantly repeated movements
- extended periods of sitting over a long period of time
- extended periods of exposure to constant vibration (jack hammer, heavy equipment, etc.)
Diagnosing a Herniated Disc, Bulging Disc or Herniated Spine Injury
An x-ray, an MRI, certain symptoms and a physical exam are commonly used in conjunction to diagnose a herniated disc condition. Herniated disc injuries can be terribly painful and debilitating and often require extended treatment, including spinal decompression, spinal injections and, often, eventually, surgery.
Treatment for Herniated or Bulging Disc Injuries
Spinal disc injury treatments may include:
- Bed rest and restricted movement – which may mean extended periods of missed work
- Physical therapy
- Medications including pain medication, steroids, and anti-inflammatory medicines
- Steroid injections into the affected spinal nerves
- Traditional Surgery – called a "discectomy" which removes the herniated disc and "laminotomy" which removes bone and ligament from around the spine
- Endoscopic microdiscectomy, which is a newer surgical technique that removes the herniated disc with small instruments through a small incision. In this procedure, the surgeon is guided to the herniated disc with a tiny camera and the repairs and removal are made through the small incision. Not all patients are a good candidate for this type of surgery, but the recovery time is often faster than with traditional surgery.
Herniated Disc Lawyers
When talking to a lawyer about whether you might have a Missouri spinal injury accident claim, be sure to ask if the firm is familiar with herniated disc claims. Herniated or bulging discs are a very particular kind of injury and require treatment which can be very costly over time.
